The reason why slaves were so important in the south were because the South's economy depended on African Americas. Unlike the North who had no need for slaves. Their economy was more industrial. Slaves were important before this time perod, but ever since the Cotton Gin, there was a need for increase for slaves. This difference between the North and South was what caused session which lead to Civil war

there wasn't that many people in the south so to pick all the cotton they had to have slaves to keep the economy steady.

Sorta ^^ Yes they had to pick more cotton but the south's economy has always depended on slaves to pick their produce. Now it's Sakurai's turn

The South needed slaves primarily because they had large plantations and they, the owners, needed cheap to free labor to tend to the farms. They aided their owners by doing tasks such as picking and growing cotton. Some slaves were also trained to become blacksmiths or carpenters, which all helped the economy significantly.
